From the Preface:
It is the purpose of this manual to provide the reader with a basic knowledge of source material for researching Cherokee ancestry. By familiarizing yourself with the sources available, where they are located, and how to use them, you are able to reduce your reliance on a research staff that may not be able to give you the proper level of attention. As you become more adept with research methodology you also become better equipped to make maximum benefit of your research time.
A secondary, but perhaps equally important, objective is to acquaint the reader with how a member of the research staff may view your request for information. These pages at times may be regarded as the "true confessions" of one member of a research staff. There are definitely some letters that receive prompt attention while others may be cast aside for several weeks. Within the following pages are a few hints which may help place your letter among the chosen.
