    Description

Pâte-de-verre as a basic concept was produced by Ancient Egyptian and Roman glass makers, prior to the first century AD. At its simplest, the process includes filling a refractory mold with granules of glass, heating the glass in a kiln until the grains fuse into a single mass, cooling and breaking away the mold, followed by cleaning and selective polishing of the glass. The benefit of this method is that colors can be specifically placed within the mold, creating elaborate decorative coloring

Almeric Walter (French, 1870-1959) : Almeric Walter was born in Sèvres in 1870 and is famous for his work in pâte-de-verre glass..Walter produced editions of his pâte-de-verre pieces, which means he either perfected the ability to reproduce the molds and waxes in quantity, or in keeping with his formal ceramic training, created a master mold from which to make numerous wax copies..Walter began working for Daum in 1904, teaming up with designer Henri Bergé to perfect the color strength of the glass..During the great Depression, in 1920's new pieces were created, typically bookends, hollow birds and fish used as light-fittings, paperweights, and animal figures. The style was simplistic, with singular color casts and semi-polished surfaces..After the war, he decided to create his own glass studio at Nancy, rue Claudot. He continued his collaboration with Henri Bergé... Almeric left Nancy in 1940 before the arrival of German troops. He returned to his studio in 1945 but did not resume work, instead he lived a life of increasing poverty and inactivity until his death in 1959..
Henri Bergé (French, 1870-1937) : born in 1870 in Diarville and died in 1937 in Nancy, is a designer and illustrator of Art Nouveau French....On completion of his studies at the Nancy School of Fine Arts, Henri Bergé worked as a decorator in Daum's company in 1895... He had a decisive impact on the introduction of an essentially floral and pastoral style in Daum glassware. As the company’s main associate, he also gave the glass-maker Amalric Walter models of objects in pâte de verre..It was at the Daum's that he knew Almaric Walter, to whom he supplied a number of models for glass-made pieces made by him.....His botanical and animal designs, studies and objects - always scientifically accurate - show how interested he was in nature; he also collected plants in the botanical gardens near Daum’s glassworks. As illustrator, Henri Bergé produced numerous menus, posters and advertisements...
