    Description

Wonderfully researched and presented history of two intersecting families coming from England to Canada West.  The marketing of Canada's bountiful West and the motivation of would be settlers leading to the great migration of the late 1800s is well covered in the research.
The once prosperous Walker family from Surrey England with a furniture manufacturing firm reaching across the empire with offices in Australia and South Africa bickered and squandered the wealth of their late father away.  Young Walker ended up in Sampsonton Alberta but advertised the Crossfield train station as the hub to build his Shire horse ranch.
The Phipps family settled in Cochran Alberta by way of a victualler that gave up supplying taverns and inns in England again intrigued by the advertising of a prosperous Canada West in contrast to the poverty of his community.
Includes much family history, genealogy and some real insight into England and Canada almost 150 years ago.
Fascinating reading as you are truly holding history in your hands.  These are informal, so you are not going to see this information on early Alberta settlers in any Pioneer publications or reference books.
