This book is 11" x 8.5" x .75" with 361 pages. Before his passing Mr. Gray made it known to his family that any profits made from the sale of this book should go toward the care and improvement of the Indian River cemetery that is located just beyond the town line between Addison and Jonesport; and what is known as Indian River is a small area of both communities that straddles the town line. It was from this area & nearby towns that the charismatic preacher, G. J. Adams talked 156 locals into cashing in enough of their holdings to get a sailing ship in 1866 to take them to Jaffa and to plant the seeds of modern Israel. (A tale well told by the late Reed M. Holmes in his book, "The Forerunners.") Anyway, many of the excerpts included relate to relatives who made that fateful trip. Even if you have no connection to Washington County, Maine, it is interesting to see what life was like during the Great Depression to those Down Easters who lived in rural, small towns along the last stretch of the Atlantic Coast before Canada. Might even be a lesson or two on surviving difficult times, should it ever happen again!
