    Description

I believe that when the French identify a brand as a classic luxury, you may be assured that it meets a world-wide standard of quality and elegance.  This is certainly true of Baccarat fine crystal and art glass. Founded in the town of Baccarat in 1765 as a maker of utility glassware, the company transitioned early in the 19th century to be a maker of the finest quality crystal glass. Today Baccarat remains the foremost glassworks in France.
These charming liqueur or cordial glasses demonstrate a creative use of glass to form a design in the shape of a thistle.  The thistle is the floral symbol of Scotland and the French district Lorraine, as well as the emblem of the Encyclopedia Brittanica.
They measure approx. 4.5" high and 2.5" across the base and hold approx. 4 oz. of liquid.
Three of the four are marked with the logo "Baccarat/France."  I cannot explain why the fourth is not.
I purchased all four pieces in the 1970's from a well-known purveyor of fine goods and Baccarat dealer, Gump's of San Francisco.  They were sold as first quality Baccarat and look exactly alike, so it was only in examining these for sale that I found one unmarked.  The photo of the unmarked base (#5) appears to show cracks but no cracks are visible to my eye. I felt a very slight bump at the stem base, possibly different from the others.
For those with a discerning eye these glasses would be an unusual yet practical purchase.  Perhaps you want to celebrate a connection to the thistle symbol?  Whatever the reason, the owner of these pieces will be proud to own Baccarat.
